"One must start by leaving open spaces of experimentation, of search, of transition: becoming-nomads." — Rosi Braidotti
“Becoming nomads” is an installation composed of six vividly colored ropes, ranging in thickness from 8 to 16 millimeters. It welcomes visitors, inviting them to read the sentences written on the ropes and pass them from hand to hand continuously. This interaction transforms the structure, leading to the formation of new knots as the ropes intertwine with one another.
The bright ropes represent our interpretation of the writings of renowned feminist writer Rosi Braidotti. Our installation, placed on the top deck of a ship to show our courage to intrude on the patriarchal ship, which has a long history of masculine dominance over crew and with its non-contemporary rules. As Braidotti suggests, we are creating an open space by installing this work, a place for transformation and development.
This project was developed in a class called Drift as a method, and we were expected to read a book called Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord and develop a project based on it. My Team and I (Olivia Müller and Yeongjun Park) explored the concept of drifting as a nomadic subject: a person changes their location, therefore changes their perspective. As all of us were international students at HFK, we already had a deep understanding of Nomadism. Furthermore, in this project, we explored this movement through a feminist perspective, drawing on Rosi Braidotti's texts.
We have chosen the texts and rewritten them in clearer and simpler language to make them understandable regardless of age, education, or background.
1 ) In Braidotti’s ‘Nomadism’, the body is a starting point, allowing feminist voices to remain fluid, shifting to reflect the diverse and evolving experiences of women.
2)A feminist is a ‘nomad’ because her identity is always changing and multifaceted, grounded in her own body and shaped by the world around her.
3)The ‘Nomadic Subject’ highlights the need for active change: not just in how we see ourselves, but in how we understand the diversity among women.
4)Real change must be earned: it requires us to break down the old, using that energy to build the new.
5)Who we are becoming is not simply an act of will, but is instead the product of endless repetitions of our daily actions.
6)Start by keeping yourself open to experimentation and change; this is the core of becoming a nomad.
Within the group, I was responsible for the project's public-facing presence and documentation: managing the @temporary_spaces Instagram account throughout the preparation and exhibition period, acting as the project photographer during both the build-up and the exhibition itself, and documenting all related events. I also designed the poster and GIF and handled email correspondence for the project. During Breminale, I presented becoming-nomads on-site aboard the Dauerwelle.
